Australian Open 2016 results and bracket: Andy Murray advances, Garbine Muguruza upset in 3rd round

Men’s No. 2 seed Andy Murray advanced to the Round of 16 at the 2016 Australian Open, but he was pushed to four sets in his match against No. 32 Joao Sousa. Murray got off to a fast start, winning the first set easily, but dropped the second set before dominating the next two, ultimately winning, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The highest seed in this half of the bracket, Murray is no longer paired with Garbine Muguruza for that title on the women’s side. Muguruza, who became the highest seeded woman in this half after Simona Halep was bounced early, had nothing to offer Barbora Strycova, who won, 6-3, 6-2. Most of the remaining players were seeded competition, but Strycova was not one of them.

That lightens the field even further for women’s top seed Serena Williams, who already had a clear shot at winning the tournament as a whole. Williams is playing some of the best tennis of her career and it’s hard to imagine any of the remaining women unseating her when she’s playing at the top of her game.

Other top men who found victory in the third round include Stan Wawrinka, the fourth seed, No. 8 David Ferrer, the eighth seed and John Isner, the No. 10 seed. For the women, No. 7 Angelique Kerber was the highest seed to win, beating Madison Brengle, 6-1,6-3. No. 21 Ekaterina Makarova scored a minor upset when she dominated No. 9 Karolina Pliskova, 6-3, 6-2.
