French Open 2016: TV schedule and matches for Sunday at Roland Garros

Kei Nishikori and Garbine Muguruza headline the players on the court for the opening day at Roland Garros.

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

The French Open at Roland Garros will get underway on Sunday, and though none of the absolute biggest names will be in action, there will be plenty to watch. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams will all play on a different day, but with people like Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic and Simona Halep playing on Sunday, it should be an exciting opener to the second major of the season.

Women’s No. 4 seed Garbine Muguruza will be the highest-seeded player to see the clay on Sunday, and she will be facing unseeded Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. Halep, the tournament’s sixth seed, will face Nao Hibino in her matchup. Other top-seeded women include Petra Kvitova, Lucie Safarova and Svetlana Kuznetsova, the 10th, 11th and 13th seeds, respectively.

Nishikori made it as far as the quarterfinals last year, becoming the first Japanese man to reach that round at Roland Garros in 82 years. But he ultimately fell to home favorite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in a five-set match. He will be taking on Simone Bolelli in his opening round matchup. Raonic, the eighth seed, faces a tricky opener against Janko Tipsarevic. Other top men in action on the day include John Isner, Nick Kyrgios and Benoit Paire, the No. 15, 17 and 19 seeds, respectively.

Television coverage of the day begins at 4 a.m. ET on the Tennis Channel. Their coverage will run through 3 p.m., with NBC also picking up coverage at 1 p.m. Online streaming is available at NBC Sports Live Extra and the Tennis Channel.
