French Open results 2016: Petra Kvitova, Lucie Safarova win on opening day amid rain delays

The French Open began with a whimper on Sunday, with the majority of the day’s matches pushed back due to a rain delay.

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

The first day of the 2016 French Open saw two separate rain delays, the first lasting more than an hour and the second leading to cancellation of the day’s remaining matches. As such, the highest seeds on the day (Kei Nishikori on the men’s side and Garbine Muguruza on the women’s side) didn’t finish their matches and will have to continue on Monday.

Nishikori, the fifth seed, held the edge over Italy’s Simone Bolelli into the third set at 6-1, 7-5, 2-1. But once play resumes on Monday, anything could happen. Muguruza, the fourth seed, didn’t get to start her match against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.

Of the matches that did get completed, the high seeds on the women’s side had better luck actually getting onto the court and completing matches. No. 10 seed Petra Kvitova was pushed to three sets against the unseeded Danka Kovinic, but ultimately won and advanced to the second round with a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 victory. Lucie Safarova, the 11th seed for the women, took down Russia’s Vitalia Diatchenko in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.

In addition to Nishikori, No. 23 seed Jack Sock is in the fourth set and is down a set to unseeded Robin Haase on the men’s side. No. 13 seed on the women’s side, Svetlana Kuznetsova, is in the third set against Yaroslava Shvedova as well. Those will continue on Monday, along with some matches including only unseeded participants.

Below are the full results for matches containing seeded opponents, with a full list of results here. The folks who are continuing or starting their matches on Monday will join the next group in the bracket.
