Andy Murray is third down the list when it comes to favorites for winning the men’s singles bracket at the 2016 French Open, behind top seed Novak Djokovic and No. 4 seed Rafael Nadal, whose past play on the clay of Roland Garros always has him up there. But through two matches, Murray has to be feeling like he usually does late in these kinds of tournaments, as he’s been pushed to five sets in both his first- and second-round matches.
French Open 2016 results: Andy Murray pushed to 5 sets again in 2nd round
Andy Murray has played two matches and 10 sets at the French Open with a whole lot more to go.

Murray needed five sets (and two days) to take down the unseeded Radek Stepanek, a player who can give any of the top guys trouble on his best day. But at that point, Murray was expected to kick things back into gear and take down Mathias Bourgue, who was also unseeded, without issue. But Bourgue took the second and third sets to force Murray all the way to a fifth set again.
Ultimately, Murray won, 6-2, 2-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. But this should be noted for later in the tournament. The third seed and defending champion, Stan Wawrinka, was also pushed to five sets in the first round, but he took down his second-round opponent, Taro Daniel of Japan, in straight sets, 7-6(7), 6-3, 6-4.
On the women’s side, both Garbine Muguruza, the fourth seed, and Simona Halep, the sixth seed, cruised to victory over their second-round opponents on Wednesday. Muguruza downed Myrtille Georges in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0 and Halep took down Zarina Diyas, 7-6(5), 6-2.
The other No. 2 seed on the day, Agnieszka Radwanska, easily handled Caroline Garcia, 6-2, 6-4.
