French Open scores 2016: Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams cruise into 3rd round

Novak Djokovic took another step closer toward his first French Open title by advancing to the third round on Thursday.

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

The fifth day at the 2016 Australian Open saw no significant upsets and relatively easy matches for many of the top seeds of the tournament. The lone exception to this was the No. 6 seed and best hope for a French champion, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who was pushed to five sets against unseeded Marcos Baghdatis.

But Tsonga did escape the match with a win, ultimately taking it, 6-7(6), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.

The top seeds on the day, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams, had no issues winning their matches on Thursday and are now into the third round. Djokovic took down Steve Darcis, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. Williams downed Teliana Pereira, 6-2, 6-1. Both are favored to win the tournament, though it’s Djokovic who is considered the most vulnerable.

That’s because he’s never won the title on the clay at Roland Garros before. Djokovic bested Nadal, the “King of Clay,” in the quarterfinals last year but was beaten by Stan Wawrinka in the finals. Djokovic has won the U.S. Open, Australian Open and Wimbledon in the past but the French Open trophy eludes him.

The only seeded players to lose out on the day were nearer the back of the pack, such as men’s No. 20 Bernard Tomic and women’s No. 28 Andrea Petkovic. Other top-seeded men who won their matches on Thursday include Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer and David Goffin. Timea Bacsinszky, Venus Williams and Carla Suarez Navarro were among the top women to find victory as well.

Below are the results from pertinent seeded matches, with full results available here.
