French Open results 2016: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga pulls out as Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams cruise

Unfortunately, the best hope for a French winner at Roland Garros this season had to drop out of the tournament on Saturday, as men’s sixth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had to abandon his match against Ernests Gulbis in the first set due to injury. Tsonga was leading 5-2 in the opening set when he sustained what appeared to be a strained groin and was forced to retire.

Tsonga’s exit comes just after Rafael Nadal, the No. 4 seed, exited the tournament with a wrist injury. It makes it more and more likely that Novak Djokovic, the top seed on the men’s side, will walk away with the victory at this year’s French Open.

A lengthy rain delay affected the match between top women’s seed Serena Williams and Kristina Mladenovic, but the world No. 1 did eventually win, 6-4, 7-6(10). Williams had an easy time with her first two matches, but after waiting over two hours due to the rain delay, she took the second set tiebreak at 12-10 to advance to the fourth round, where she’ll take on No. 18 Elina Svitolina.

Williams is still on track to equal Steffi Graf’s record of 22 Grand Slam titles. Her sister, Venus, needed three sets but ultimately took down Alize Cornet on Saturday, 7-6(5), 1-6, 6-0. Other top women in action included Ana Ivanovic, the 14th seed, and Carla Suarez Navarro, the No. 12 seed. Ivanovic fell to her first seeded opponent in Svitolina, while Navarro took down No. 22 Dominicka Cibulkova in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

Djokovic cruised to victory in his third-round match, besting unseeded Aljaz Bedene, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3. Below are full results for the pertinent seeded matchups.
