French Open results 2016: Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic win as tournament gets back on track

After several rain delays, the French Open got back on track on Wednesday.

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

After a massive rain delay that wiped out all play on Monday and another that only allowed a scant amount of tennis played on Tuesday, the clay of Roland Garros remained relatively dry for several matches on Wednesday. After the ousting of top players such as No. 2 Agnieszka Radwanska and No. 6 Simona Halep, the upsets were nowhere to be found this time around.

Top seed Serena Williams continued her excellent play by dispatching No. 18 Elina Svitolina in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Unfortunately, her sister was unable to find similar success, falling to No. 8 seed Timea Bacsinszky, 6-2, 6-4. This comes after the Williams sisters were also eliminated from doubles competition, leaving Serena as the only one remaining in the tournament.

But Serena is obviously the headliner anyway. She is shooting for her 22nd Grand Slam title and is now into the quarterfinals after besting Svitolina. Kiki Bertens also punched her ticket into the quarterfinals by beating No. 15 seed Madison Keys in straight sets. Because of the delays, some quarterfinal matchups also took place on Wednesday

No. 21 seed Samantha Stosur ended the impressive run of unseeded Tsvetana Pironkova in her match, 6-4, 7-6(6). Another unseeded player, Shelby Rogers, fell in her match to No. 4 seed Garbine Muguruza, 7-5, 6-3. Muguruza is considered the top hope for taking down Williams,

On the men’s side, top seed Novak Djokovic was pushed to four sets, but he still took down No.. 14 Roberto Bautista Agut, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 7-5. Djokovic briefly played in the rain on Tuesday and there was some concern when the rain delay left him tied with Agut at a set apiece. Djokovic has never won the title at Roland Garros, the only Grand Slam he hasn’t won.

No. 3 Stan Wawrinka, the defending champion who bested Djokovic in the finals last year, handled unseeded Albert Ramos-Vinolas in his quarterfinal match, 6-2, 6-1, 7-6(7). He moved on to the semifinals, along with No. 2 seed Andy Murray, who needed four sets to take down Richard Gasquet, the ninth seed. Murray has played a couple five-set matches this tournament already.

The quarterfinals will wrap up on Thursday as the tournament gets caught up after the rain delays. Below, we’ve got full results from the singles brackets.
