Garbine Muguruza has faced Serena Williams four times in her short career, and in those meetings she’s only won once. That was two years ago and she’s been taken down by Williams twice since then, but she does have one big thing going for her: the win came on the clay of Roland Garros.
Serena Williams vs. Garbine Muguruza, French Open 2016: Time, TV schedule and live stream for women’s final
Muguruza’s task is the tallest in the sport: beat Serena Williams in a Grand Slam final.

That’s the site of the French Open, where Muguruza is set to face Williams in the finals on Saturday, and the site where she eliminated Williams early in the Round of 64 back in 2014. She has that going for her, and the fact that she’s playing the best tennis of her short career at this point, but there’s an awful lot going against her as well.
Like the fact that she has to face Williams at all. There is no greater opponent in tennis today. While Muguruza is shooting for her first ever Grand Slam title, Williams is looking to tie Steffi Graf’s record for the most titles of any person in the Open area with 22.
The last time these two faced off was 2015, when Muguruza was playing in her first ever Grand Slam final at Wimbledon. Williams took her down there to earn yet another title, winning that match 6-4, 6-4. Muguruza did put up some resistance in that match, and looked good in the Round of 16 at the Australian Open where she took a set from Williams.
But ultimately, anybody beating Williams in any situation would be scoring an upset. Muguruza is the No. 4 women’s tennis player in the world, but she’s still a massive underdog. Williams will eventually get her 22nd Grand Slam title and probably another one after that to pass Graf for the record, but right now it’s Muguruza’s task to put that off for at least a couple months.
Television coverage of the women's final will begin at 9 a.m. ET on NBC. Online streaming will be available for the match as well, on NBC Sports Live Extra.
