Olympics 2016 tennis results and scores: Play cancelled Wednesday due to rain

The weather was not cooperating on Wednesday in Rio.

Poor weather caused several delays for tennis at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and eventually caused all play on all courts to be cancelled for the day. Initially, all but six matches were cancelled -- some big ones that were expected to be played late in the evening. But after the weather refused to let up, the day of play was cancelled and fans attending the matches were given refunds.

The day was supposed to include big matches for Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Angelique Kerber, among others. Madison Keys of the United States is still alive in women’s singles play, and has a quarterfinal match against Daria Kasatkina of Russia as she tries to keep the country’s chance of tennis hardware alive.

Serena Williams and Venus Williams are both already eliminated from singles and doubles play.

On the men’s side, Steve Johnson is still in for singles play and has a match against Evgeny Donskoy of Russia that was postponed. It’s a third-round match. He also has a men’s doubles semifinals match alongside Jack Sock up against Florin Mergea and Horia Tecau of Romania, set immediately after his singles match.

Play will continue as scheduled on Thursday, provided the weather holds up. Other top players scheduled to be in action include Gael Monfils, Marin Cilic, Petra Kvitova, Kei Nishikori and Elina Svitolina, the woman who eliminated Serena in singles play.
