It was an impressive run at the 2016 Rio Olympics, but No. 7 seed Madison Keys will not be bringing home silver or gold for the United States in the women’s singles bracket. Keys, who was overlooked until both Venus Williams and Serena Williams were eliminated in earlier rounds, made it further than expected but fell to second seed Angelique Kerber in the semifinals on Friday.
Olympics 2016 tennis results and scores: Madison Keys, Steve Johnson lose; USA earns bronze in men’s doubles
The U.S. still has a chance at women’s singles bronze, which would be nice to add to the men’s doubles bronze they earned on Friday.

Kerber bested Keys in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, and will advance to the finals. There the German will face Monica Puig of Puerto Rico, who is unseeded in the tournament. Puig managed to beat Petra Kvitova, the eleventh seed from the Czech Republic on Friday, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
That means Kvitova and Keys will face off in a bronze medal match on Saturday. Keys has a chance to salvage the bracket for the United States and bring home some Olympic hardware.
On the men’s side, Steve Johnson was the only remaining American, but he drew No. 2 seed Andy Murray in the quarterfinals on Friday and finally lost. Murray needed three sets to beat Johnson, 6-0, 4-6, 7-6(2), and will advance to the semifinals. Murray is the favorite since Juan Martin Del Potro defeated Novak Djokovic, the top seed, in the first round.
Del Potro is having an incredible run at the Olympics, and continued that on Friday when he bested No. 10 Roberto Bautista Agut in the quarterfinals. Rafael Nadal also made it past Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci and Kei Nishikori, the No. 4 seed, bested No. 6 Gael Monfils to advance to the semifinals as well.
In doubles play, the team of Naal and Marc Lopez beat Florin Mergea and Horia Tecau to earn the gold medal in the men’s bracket. In the bronze medal match, the United States earned their first hardware in tennis, as the team of Johnson and Jack Sock defeated Vasek Pospisil and Daniel Nestor of Canada.
In mixed doubles, Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram advanced to the quarterfinals with a win over Roberta Vinci and Fabio Fognini.
