Juan Martin Del Potro has been at the top of the tennis world before, when he won the US Open in 2009. But since then, his success has been staggered, and he entered the 2016 Rio Olympics as an unseeded player, with the toughest opponent on the whole schedule: Novak Djokovic.
Andy Murray vs. Juan Martin Del Potro, 2016 Olympic tennis: Time, TV schedule and live stream for men’s gold medal
Murray and Del Potro are guaranteed at least a silver medal, but the two will fight for the gold in Rio on Sunday.

But Del Potro made it past Djokovic, upsetting the Serb and advancing further into the tournament. The upsets continued and on Saturday, he bested Rafael Nadal after a third-set tiebreak to win his semifinals match, guaranteeing at least a silver medal from Rio. But he’ll be wanting the gold and if he’s going to get it, he’ll have to get past Andy Murray.
Murray, the second seed and defending gold medalist from the London 2012 Olympics, easily dispatched Kei Nishikori, the fourth seed, and will be favored in Sunday’s final. Murray is playing outstanding tennis and took down Nishikori in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
On the other hand, Del Potro struggled with Nadal, himself the third seed in the tournament. Del Potro ended up beating Nadal, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(5) after the tiebreak and he’ll have a lot more court time on his body when he faces Murray in the final.
Murray and Del Potro have played each other seven times, with Murray winning five of those outings. But six of those matches came between 2008 and 2009, with the most recent being the 2013 Indian Wells quarterfinals, where Del Potro beat Murray in three sets. So while the most recent outing has gone to the Argentinian, the two haven’t played each other for a few years.
Del Potro and Murray will play in the third match on Centre Court, after the women’s doubles gold medal and mixed doubles gold medal matches. Play is scheduled to begin on the court at 11 a.m. ET, with the men’s singles final not beginning before 2:30 p.m. A live stream will be available on NBC Sports, and Bravo will carry television coverage throughout the day.
