Olympics 2016 tennis results and scores: Venus Williams loses, American men struggle on Day 1

Venus Williams lost her opening round match at the 2016 Rio Olympics and is out of singles competition.

Venus Williams will not go through to the second round at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The fifth-seeded American lost to Kirsten Flipkens in her opening match on Saturday. Williams won the first set but was pushed to three sets and eventually fell to Flipkens, who will advance after the 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) victory.

Williams took the first set without much issue, but Flipkens battled back with a fierce second set. Neither player played mistake-free tennis, and there were multiple breaks from both sides in the second set. Williams initially trailed 4-1 in the second set, but battled back, got it to 5-3 and had a triple break point opportunity.

She let it get to deuce, however, and the game continued. Ultimately, her lack of finishing let Flipkens win the second set, forcing a third. Williams came out of the gate looking dominant in that set and led 4-1 at one stage. But she failed to break Flipkens, and on her following service game was broken by Flipkens to get the match back on serve.

Venus managed to break her back though, and was then serving for the match. It hit deuce several times, but eventually ended in favor of Flipkens, who went on to serve to try and get things back on track. She held serve, and then broke Williams in a dominant game to take the lead. Serving for the set, Flipkens was broken once again and the match went to tiebreak, where Flipkens won.

American men were not expected to earn medals in singles or doubles play in Rio, but the first day of action was still disappointing, seeing three of the four singles competitors eliminated in the Round of 64.

Jack Sock, the No. 14 seed, fell to unseeded Taro Daniel of Japan in straight sets. Daniel simply played solid tennis and took advantage of Sock precisely when he needed to, earning the 6-4, 6-4 win and a spot in the second round.

Brian Baker, an unseeded American, also fell to a Japanese opponent in Yuichi Sugita. The match went three sets, but Sugita came out on top, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4. Slovakia’s Andrej Martin punched his ticket to the second round with a win over another unseeded American, Denis Kudla, beating him, 6-0, 6-3.

The lone American man to advance on Saturday was Steve Johnson, who is also the highest-seeded from Team USA at No. 12. He took down Darian King of Barbados to advance, 6-3, 6-2.

Top-seeded men in action on the day -- including Kei Nishikori, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Marin Cilic -- all advanced without issue on Saturday. On the women’s side, the top seed on the day in Agnieszka Radwanska was upset at the hands of Sasai Zheng of China.

Madison Keys, the No. 7-seeded American woman, easily took down Danka Kovinic to advance, 6-3, 6-3. Below are results from the singles brackets for both the men and women on Saturday.
