The first day of the Australian Open has come and (mostly) gone and the top seeds from both brackets, Andy Murray and Angelique Kerber, are still intact. Murray downed Illya Marchenko in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6(5), 6-2 in his opener while Kerber was pushed to three sets against Lesia Tsurenko, ultimately winning, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.

There was one major upset on the day, as Shelby Rogers dominated Simona Halep, the tournament’s fourth seed in the women’s singles bracket. Halep seemed poised to do some real damage this year but Rogers, an unseeded opponent, made short work of her in the 6-3, 6-1 victory.

Other seeded women who fell include No. 15 Roberta Vinci, who lost to Coco Vandeweghe and No. 19 Kiki Bertens, who lost to Varvara Lepchenko. On the men’s side, the only top-20 player to fall was Lucas Pouille, the No. 16 seed, who lost to Alexander Bublik, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

But some of the top-seeded men did struggle. Fourth seed Stan Wawrinka was almost on the losing end of an upset himself, being pushed to five sets before besting Martin Klizan, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Fifth seed Kei Nishikori and seventh seed Marin Cilic both needed five sets to get past Andrey Kuznetsov and Jerzy Janowicz, their respective unseeded opponents.

Roger Federer, the 17th seed, went on to best Jurgen Melzer in the fourth set. Below are the full results for Sunday night and Monday morning’s matches that involved seeded competition.
