Novak Djokovic had a much easier time against Fernando Verdasco at the Australian Open than he had about a week before the tournament started. Djokovic had to fight off multiple match points against Verdasco previously, but in his opener in Melbourne, he made short work of the Spaniard, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6(4), 6-2.
Australian Open results and bracket 2017: Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams advance to 2nd round
Second seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams advanced to the second round of the Australian Open with wins on Tuesday.

Djokovic is now in to the second round, where thus far everyone of significance in the men’s bracket has made it. Also winning their matches on Monday evening and Tuesday morning were third seed Milos Raonic, sixth seed Gael Monfils, eighth seed Dominic Thiem, and ninth seed Rafael Nadal.
On the women’s side, the top seeds also fared well. Second seed Serena Williams made short work of Belinda Bencic in her opener, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Fifth seed Karolina Pliskova bested Sara Sorribes Tormo, 6-2, 6-0, sixth seed Dominika Cibulkova bested Denisa Allertova, 7-5, 6-2, and ninth seed Johanna Konta took down Kirsten Flipkens, 7-5, 6-2.
The only seeded man to fall on the day was No. 28 Feliciano Lopez, who was eliminated by Fabio Fognini in straight sets. Women’s No. 18 seed Samantha Stosur was the top to drop in that bracket, falling to Heather Watson in three sets.
Nadal needed just three sets to best Florian Mayer, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Nadal spent much of 2016 dealing with injuries and it’s the biggest question mark for the rest of his career at this point. He seems healthy now, at the start of the Australian Open, but will that remain true throughout the tournament?
Raonic made it through tough opener Dustin Brown with minimal damage, besting the hard-server in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
