Angelique Kerber, the top seed for the women, hasn’t been easily stomping her way through the tournament. She was pushed in the Australian Open’s first round, and she was pushed again in the second. But she made it past Carina Witthoeft in three sets in the second, winning, 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-2, and is in a good position going forward.

The other top seed, Andy Murray, had a much easier time with his second-round opponent, Andrey Rublev. Murray bested Rublev in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, 6-2.

There were some upsets on the day. Men’s seventh seed Marin Cilic was on the losing end of a four-set matched against the unseeded Daniel Evans, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-3. Staying on the men’s side, 14th seed and Australian Nick Kyrgios fell to Andreas Seppi in three sets. Finally, No. 19-seeded American John Isner also lost, falling to Mischa Zverev in five sets.

Women’s 10th seed Carla Suarez Navarro was the highest casualty in that bracket, falling to Sorana Cirstea in straight sets, 7-6(1), 6-3. Shuai Zhang, the No. 20 seed, also fell to Alison Riske, 7-6(7), 4-6, 6-1. Both No. 27 Irina Camelia-Begu and No. 29 Monica Puig fell as well, losing to Kristyna Pliskova and Mona Barthel, respectively.

Top seeds who DIDN’T lose include men’s fourth seed Stan Wawrinka, who bested Steve Johnson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 and Kei Nishikori, the fifth seed, who bested Jeremy Chardy, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. The final top-10 seed to win on Tuesday was Tomas Berdych, who beat Ryan Harrison, 6-3, 7-6(6), 6-2.

Garbine Muguruza, the women’s seventh seed, made short week of Samantha Crawford, 7-5, 6-4. Eighth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Jaimee Fourlis, 6-2, 6-1.
