The defending champions for the 2017 French Open are still in the fray after two rounds. Men’s second seed Novak Djokovic took down Joao Sousa while women’s fourth seed Garbine Muguruza bested Anett Kontaveit.
French Open results 2017: Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal advance to 3rd round
The French Open continued on Wednesday and most of the top seeds advanced.


Of the two, Djokovic had the easier time, dropping Sousa in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3. Muguruza needed three sets to beat Kontaveit, but she got her win, 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2.
On the men’s side, Rafael Nadal, the favorite in this year’s tournament, also advanced on Wednesday. He made short work of Robin Haase in his second-round match, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3. Dominic Thiem, the sixth seed, is another popular pick by experts and he breezed through Simone Bolelli, 7-5, 6-1, 6-3, on Wednesday.
Milos Raonic, the fifth seed, needed four sets but bested Rogerio Dutra Silva. David Goffin, the other top-10 seed for the men, needed four sets but also advanced against Sergiy Stakhovsky.
On the women’s side, competition at the top got a little less intense as sixth seed Dominika Cibulkova was beaten by the unseeded Ons Jabeur. Jabeur won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
American Venus Williams made it into the third round after a straight sets win over Kurumi Nara, 6-3, 6-1.
