There were two big retirements at the 2017 French Open on Friday, with both David Goffin and Milos Raonic affected by them. Unfortunately for Goffin, the 10th seed, he was the one to retire after slipping on the tarp and injuring his ankle during his third-round match against Horacio Zeballos.
French Open results 2017: David Goffin out with injury, Rafael Nadal advances to 4th round
Two big injuries occurred on Friday at the French Open.

Raonic, the fifth seed, benefited from a retirement when his third-round opponent, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, had to pull out of their match with a left thigh injury.
Goffin went down hard and held his ankle, immediately in obvious pain. The tarp that was folded up at the back of the court was the cause of his fall, as he caught his foot under it while chasing a ball down the baseline.
Rafael Nadal, the men’s fourth seed, looked about as good as ever on the clay on Friday, dominating his third-round opponent, Nikoloz Basilashvili, dropping only one game over three sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.
Nadal is still the favorite to win the French Open despite not being the top seed. He’s dominant on clay, and though he’s getting up there in years and has a significant injury history, Friday’s performance should do nothing but reinforce those opinions.
Garbine Muguruza, the women’s fifth seed and defending champion, made it into the fourth round as well with a win over her first seeded opponent of the competition, Yulia Putintseva. Muguruza took down Putintseva, the 27th seed, in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.
Two American women fell in the third round in Shelby Rogers and Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Both were unseeded, with the former losing to 13th seed Kristina Mladenovic in three sets, 7-5,4-6, 8-6 and the latter losing to No. 23 seed Samantha Stosur in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
