Venus Williams was involved in a June 9 car accident in which a Florida man died two weeks later. Now she’s facing a wrongful death lawsuit, according to the New York Times.

Williams was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol when the incident occurred. A police report did find Williams at fault in the incident that resulted in the death of Jerome Barson, who was 78.

Linda Barson, 68, alleges in the lawsuit that she suffered “a cracked sternum, shattered right arm, broken wrist, hand and fingers” in the accident that killed her husband. Via the Miami Sun-Sentinel:

Linda Barson told police she was traveling west toward the intersection and slowing for a red light when it turned green. “[Barson] advised she proceeded thru the intersection when [Williams] cut across in front of [Barson], and [Barson] was unable to avoid crashing into [Williams].

Williams told police she was traveling north across the intersection on a green light when she stopped “in the median break due to other traffic.”

“[Williams] advised she did not see [Barson] when she crossed the westbound lanes of Northlake Blvd.,” the report said.

Williams’ lawyer released a statement detailing the tennis legend’s side of the story.

Williams was physically unharmed in the accident and is still slated to play in Wimbledon next week.
