French Open results 2017: Venus Williams, Garbine Muguruza out in Round of 16

The 2017 French Open saw some big upsets on Sunday, primarily in the women’s division. American Venus Williams, the 10th seed and only Williams sister playing due to her sister Serena’s pregnancy, found herself on the losing end of a match against Timea Bacsinszky.

Williams had a good shot at making a run this year due to the weakened field, but she is now a casualty of that field. Bacsinszky, the No. 30 overall seed, bested Williams in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.

Garbine Muguruza, the fourth seed for the women and defending champion, also failed to make it to the top eight players. Kristina Mladenovic, the 13th seed, took down Muguruza in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

The eighth seed, Svetlana Kuznetsova, was also eliminated on Sunday. But it wasn’t much of an upset, as she fell to 11th seed Caroline Wozniacki in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

Rafael Nadal has looked incredible on the clay of Roland Garros, and that streak continued on Sunday. Nadal dominated No. 17 Robert Bautista Agut, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. Kei Nishikori, the eighth seed, needed five sets but also moved on by beating Hyeon Chung, 7-5, 6-4, 6-7(4), 0-6, 6-4.

Milos Raonic, the fifth seed, found himself on the losing end of a five-set match against No. 20 Pablo Carreno Busta. Busta dropped the first and third sets and the rest of the match was close, but he took the win and is into the top eight, 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-7(6), 6-4, 8-6.
