Roger Federer made it through another opponent at Wimbledon on Thursday, getting by Serbian Dusan Lajovic in straight sets, 7-6(0), 6-3, 6-2.

Novak Djokovic, the second seed and defending champion, made short work of his second-round opponent, Adam Pavlasek. Djokovic and Federer both faced opponents who retired after a single set in the first round, so things are going well for them at Wimbledon thus far.

Djokovic has had his struggles this year, and at times he’s even talked about taking a break from tennis. That sounds extreme for a player who is currently ranked second in the world, but it’s the reality of his difficulties. Federer kept himself out of the French Open to keep his body fresh for Wimbledon, and it looks like it is paying off.

Karolina Pliskova, the third seed for the women, took the first set against Magdalena Rybarikova but could not keep pace and fell in three sets. Rybarikova, an unseeded player, moves on to the third round after bouncing the highest seed thus far, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Juan Martin del Potro, who has enjoyed a nice career resurgence over the past year or so, saw his Wimbledon hopes slip away as he lost to Ernests Gulbis in straight sets, 6-4, 64, 7-6(3). Dominic Thiem, the eighth seed, needed four sets but took down Gilles Simon, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.

Thiem is notable for drubbing Djokovic in the semifinals at the French Open, but he was beaten decisively by Rafael Nadal in the finals. Thiem is still searching for his first Grand Slam title.

While Pliskova found herself eliminated, other top-seeded women made it through on Thursday. Seventh seed Svetlana Kuznetsova took down Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5. Agnieszka Radwanska, the ninth seed, made it through Christina McHale in three sets, 5-7, 7-6(7), 6-3.
