Rain delayed the majority of Tuesday’s matches at the 2017 US Open, but play under the roof of Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York continued unabated. That allowed top seeds Rafael Nadal and Karolina Pliskova to play their matches, and both made it through comfortably to the second round.

Nadal was pushed to a tiebreak in his opening set against Dusan Lajovic, but ultimately took that set in just over an hour. He went on to win in straight sets, 7-6(6), 6-2, 6-2. Pliskova made very short work of her opener, Magda Linette, dropping her in just over an hour, 6-2, 6-1.

After Simona Halep, the women’s second seed, fell on Day 1, another high seed from that singles bracket fell on Tuesday in Angelique Kerber.

Kerber, the sixth seed, had nothing to offer the unseeded Naomi Osaka of Japan, who took a straight set victory in just 65 minutes, 6-3, 6-1. Jelena Ostapenko, the women’s 12th seed, struggled in her opener, but made it past Lara Arruabarrena in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1.

At the time of writing, women’s 15th seed Madison Keys is in action against Elise Mertens, and men’s third seed Roger Federer, is set to play his opener against Frances Tiafoe to close out the night on the featured court.

Women’s fourth seed Elina Svitolina was playing on the second court when rain delayed the match. She was well ahead of Katerina Siniakova at the time of postponement, leading 6-0, 6-6(2-1). Matches involving names like Dominic Thiem, Juan Martin del Potro, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Grigor Dimitrov were all postponed to Wednesday.
