Maria Sharapova, playing in her first Grand Slam since a doping ban 15 months ago, made it into the fourth round of the US Open, but no further. She ran into Anastasija Sevastova, the 16th seed, and lost a tough-fought three-setter, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Venus Williams, the women’s ninth seed, made it past her fourth-round opponent, Carla Suarez Navarro, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

Sharapova entered the US Open as an unseeded player, but began her bid by eliminating second seed Simona Halep in the opening round. With Serena Williams still out of the picture due to her pregnancy, Sharapova was one of the early favorites. Now she’s out, and Sevastova is in to the quarterfinals.

Williams took the first set against Navarro without issue at 6-3, but was broken on her first serve in the second set. Navarro then held, and then broke Williams again to go up 3-0. But Williams broke her back and held serve, making it interesting. Navarro, though, held on and scored multiple breaks to take the second set and push it to three.

Williams dominated that third set though, and took a win without issue.

On the men’s side, Pablo Carreno Busta made it past Denis Shapovalov, though he was pushed to a tiebreak in all three sets. Diego Schwartzman, the 29th seed, continued his strong run through the depleted bottom half of the draw in a four-set victory over 16th seed Lucas Pouille on Sunday as well.
