Roger Federer and Simona Halep easily advanced to the second round of the 2018 Australian Open. He was dominant in the straight-set victory and remains one of the favorites to win again.
Australian Open 2018 results and bracket: Roger Federer, Simona Halep advance
Roger Federer and Simona Halep easily made it into the next round of the Australian Open.

He does have a tough draw — a lot tougher than Rafael Nadal, the top seed. But Federer also beat Nadal in 2017, so this tournament is just heating up.
Halep, the top seed for the women, made it through qualifier Destanee Aiava in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-1. She has yet to win a Grand Slam, and many are doubting her this year. But she looked great in her opener, so she’s on to the second round.
Another top seed on the men’s side, Alexander Zverev, made short work of Thomas Fabbiano, his opening opponent. He won in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6(5), 7-5. David Goffin and Stan Wawrinka, the seventh- and ninth-seeded men, both needed four sets but made it through Matthias Bachinger and Ricardas Berankis, respectively.
Women’s third seed Garbine Muguruza easily made it past Jessika Ponchet, 6-4, 6-3, and is into the second round. Other top-seeded women Karolina Pliskova, Caroline Garcia and Johanna Konta bested Veronica Cepede Royg, Carina Witthoeft and Madison Brengle.
