Australian Open 2018 results and bracket: Rafael Nadal, Caroline Wozniacki into 3rd round

Nadal and Wozniacki were the top seeds in action on Tuesday, and they made it through to the third round.

No top-10-seeded singles players fell on the third day of the Australian Open, at least at the time of writing. Men’s top seed Rafael Nadal breezed through his tough second-round opponent, Leonardo Mayer, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4).

Caroline Wozniacki, the second-seeded woman, needed three sets to best her second-round opponent, Jana Fett. Still, she’s into the third round after the 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory.

Elina Svitolina, a popular pick and the fourth seed on the women’s side, needed three sets as well, but bested Katerina Siniakova, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. The seventh-seeded Jelena Ostapenko also needed three sets, beating Ying-Ying Duan, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

On the men’s side, the sixth-seeded Marin Cilic bested Joao Sousa in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5, 6-2. Pablo Carreno Busta, the 10th seed, bested Gilles Simon when the latter had to retire in the second set.

There were some casualties in the women’s bracket outside of the top 10. Julia Goerges, the 12th seed, was beaten by Alize Cornet in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The 15th-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova also fell in her match against Kateryna Bondarenko, 6-2, 6-3. No. 22 seed Daria Kasatkina fell to Magda Linette in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-2.

The woman who bested Venus Williams in the opening round, Belinda Bencic, was bounced in the second round by Lusika Kumkhum, 6-1, 6-3.
