Two highly ranked players fell on the fourth day of the Australian Open after being on the wrong end of significant upsets in the second round.
Australian Open 2018 results and bracket: Garbine Muguruza, David Goffin eliminated
Two high seeds from either bracket were eliminated on the fourth day of the Australian Open.

Women’s third seed, Garbine Muguruza, was dropped in straight sets by the unseeded Su Wei-Hsieh, 7-6(1), 6-4. David Goffin, the seventh seed for the men, managed to win one set but ultimately lost to Julien Benneteau, 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-1, 7-6(4).
Goffin and Muguruza were popular picks to win it, though the latter was considered more likely. In a bracket where the women’s top seed has never won a Grand Slam title, Muguruza was a legitimate contender to go all the way this year.
Goffin is a step back from Federer, Rafael Nadal, and guys like that, but he’s the seventh seed and was a popular upset pick. Now he’s out.
Both Simona Halep, the top-seeded woman, and Roger Federer, the second-seeded man, have their second-round matches on Day 4, but at the time of writing have not yet completed their matches.
On the women’s side, the ninth-seeded Johanna Konta was also dropped in straight sets by her unseeded opponent, Bernarda Pera, 6-3, 7-5.
Below are the full results from Wednesday at the time of writing. Wednesday evening’s action in the US equals mid-morning Thursday in Melbourne.
