Unseeded American Tennys Sandgren is into the quarterfinals of the Australian Open after pulling off a remarkable upset over Dominic Thiem, the fifth seed. Sandgren needed five sets, but he claimed a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-7(7), 6-3.

Sandgren played a clean first set, hitting 14 winners while converting on both of his break point attempts. In the second, he failed on both of attempts, while Thiem was able to convert on one of his four, which was enough to win the set.

The third and fourth were extremely contentious, with Sandgren winning the first tiebreak and Thiem winning the second. But in the fifth, Sandgren took over again and earned the victory.

Sandgren has never made it this deep into a Grand Slam. He also earned a huge win over ninth seed Stan Wawrinka in the second round.

Simona Halep, against all odds, looked fresh and healthy against Naomi Osaka in the fourth round of the Australian Open on Sunday. Halep, the top seed, had a marathon third-round match that ended in a 15-13 third set tiebreak after coming into the tournament sporting an ankle injury.

But on Sunday, she took down Osaka in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. She looked fine, and that’s important in her bid for her first-ever Grand Slam title.

In addition to Halep, men’s second seed Roger Federer won in a relatively easy matchup. He advanced to the quarterfinals by beating the unseeded Marton Fucsovics, 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-2. Federer is the defending champion and has looked excellent thus far.

The women’s eighth seed, Caroline Garcia, found herself on the losing end of a match against No. 17 Madison Keys, an American. Keys took their match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
