Two of the tournament favorites and top seeds in the singles brackets of the 2018 Australian Open were eliminated on Monday. Grigor Dimitrov, the men’s third seed, was bounced in four sets by the unseeded Kyle Edmund.

Elina Svitolina, the women’s fourth seed, was dominated by Elise Mertens in straight sets.

Dimitrov may be the higher seed, but he has to contend with guys like Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer while Svitolina is in a more inconsistent field that doesn’t include Serena Williams.

Svitolina was a popular choice among experts to pick up this year’s title, though it wasn’t expected to be easy with a fired-up Simona Halep in the field.

But Mertens, an unseeded player herself, made short work of Svitolina, taking her down in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Mertens managed to win 67 percent of her first serves, but more impressively, won 65 percent of second serves. She hit 26 winners to Svitolina’s 14 and outplayed her at essentially every turn.

Edmund needed four sets but ultimately bested Dimitrov, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Edmund hit 13 aces and converted on five of a whopping 15 break-point attempts. He hit 46 winners to Dimitrov’s 32.

Edmund and Mertens are the first two players into the singles semifinals.
