The 2018 French Open continued on Saturday with several high-profile third-round matchups, but none more high-profile than Rafael Nadal’s domination of Richard Gasquet, the 27th-seed, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
Rafael Nadal downs Richard Gasquet, cruises into Round of 16
Nadal dropped Richard Gasquet in straight sets on Saturday. He looked as good as ever on the clay of Roland Garros.

Serena Williams also advanced in straight sets, besting Julia Goerges, the 11th seed, and will next face Maria Sharapova in the fourth round.
Nadal, up 4-1 in the first set, was broken by Gasquet, who then promptly held to make it a bit closer. But Nadal quickly served for the set and was up on the Frenchman. The second set saw Gasquet battle hard in the opening volleys, but he ultimately fell far behind Nadal. He converted both break attempts, and won 100 percent of his second serves in that frame.
Nadal wound up converting on six of nine break point attempts, and hit 37 winners to Gasquet’s 19, while committing just 16 unforced errors to Gasquet’s 24.
Nadal advances to the Round of 16, where he’ll face the unseeded Maximilian Marterer.
Garbine Muguruza, the 2016 French Open champion, made short work of her third-round opponent, Samantha Stosur. Muguruza won the match, 6-0, 6-2, and may be the favorite to win it all given how strong she’s been playing. She advances to the fourth round, where she will face the unseeded Lesia Tsurenko.
Tsurenko made it through No. 19 Magdalena Rybarikova on Saturday, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
The big upset on the day saw Maria Sharapova, the 28th seed, dominate Karolina Pliskova, the sixth seed. It wasn’t close at all, with Sharapova winning, 6-2, 6-1. She will meet the winner of Serena Williams vs. No. 11 Julia Goerges, a match that is also taking place on Sunday, in the fourth round.
American Sloane Stephens needed three sets, but she bested Camia Giorgi on Saturday, 4-6, 6-1, 8-6. Stephens is the 10th seed, and she will next face Anett Kontaveit, who bested eighth seed Petra Kvitova in straight sets on the day, 7-6(6), 7-6(4).
Williams and Goerges are set to play on Court Suzanne-Lenglen at the conclusion of the match between Caroline Garcia and Irina-Camelia Begu., which itself follows the completion of the David Goffin vs. Gael Monfils match.
