Sloane Stephens, Elina Svitolina upset on Wimbledon Day 1; Serena Williams advances

Two top-seeded women were eliminated on the opening day of Wimbledon, while both Williams Sisters and Roger Federer made it through unscathed.

While many of the top players made it through the first day of Wimbledon unscathed — Serena Williams, Roger Federer, Caroline Wozniacki and others — there were a couple high profile upsets on Monday. The first saw women’s fourth seed Sloane Stephens bounced in straight sets by Donna Vekic, 6-1, 6-3.

Stephens was one of the favorites for the tournament after winning the US Open in 2017 and making it to the final at Roland Garros before the start of the grass court season.

“Obviously (I had) a bit of confidence coming off a French Open final, as any player would,” Stephens said. “But yeah, just today was unfortunate, unlucky. I played a good player on grass. That’s tough. Sometimes that happens.’’

Another favorite in fifth seed Elina Svitolina was taken down as well, in three sets by Tatjana Maria, 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-1. CoCo Vandeweghe, another American woman like Stephens, was also upset on Monday, at the hands of Katerina Siniakova.

Williams, the 25th seed, looked in fine form in a win over Arantxa Rus, 7-5, 6-3.

“I don’t know if I’m relieved or more motivated, I’d say, but I’m happy to get through that,” Williams said after the match. “She played unbelievable today. I’d never seen her play like that. You’ve got to be ready for everything. I didn’t play my best but I’ll get there, I’ll just take it one match at a time.”

Her sister, Venus Williams, needed three sets but advanced past Johanna Larsson, 7-6(3), 6-2, 6-1. Another top-seeded American, No. 10 Madison Keys, made it through Alja Tomljanovic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Venus will face Alexandra Dulgheru, while Serena will take on Viktoriya Tomova in the second round.

Federer, the top seed and defending champion for the men, made short work of his opening opponent, Dusan Lajovic. Federer looked fresh in the 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 win, and now the big question is whether or not he can maintain it as he did a year ago. Federer skipped the clay court season to keep himself fresh for Wimbledon, so hopefully that pays off for him.

In the men’s bracket, the only top seed to fall on the day was the sixth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov, who was dropped by the former top three player, Stan Wawrinka. Wawrinka needed four sets, but beat Dimitrov, 1-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(5), 6-4. Marin Cilic, the third seed, made it through Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4.
