Iga Swiatek now has her third French Open title.
Iga Swiatek outlasts Karolina Muchova to claim her third French Open title
Swiatek holds off Karolina Muchova for her third title in Paris

Swiatek came out on top against Karolina Muchova in thrilling three-set match, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, to emerge victorious in Paris on Saturday.
After a convincing 6-2 win for Swiatek in the first set, it looked as if she was going to cruise to the title, taking the first three games of the second set to lead 3-0 midway through.
But Muchova had something in store for the top-seeded Swiatek starting with the fourth game of that second set.
Muchova held serve to make it 3-1 and broke serve in the fifth game to push it to 3-2. She held serve once again to tie the second set at 3. Then with the set 4-4, Muchova broke serve yet again in the ninth game, giving her a chance to serve out for the win in the second set.
That’s when Swiatek broke right back, knotting the second set at 5-5. She was helped by several unforced errors from Muchova, including one return that was well wide, and looked off coming off the racket.
Muchova broke again, taking the 11th game of the set convincingly and giving her one more chance to serve out to win the second set. She fell down 30-Love in the 11th game, including a double fault, but stormed back to knot the 11th game at 30-30 with an impressive ace that Swiatek could not even reach. She would eventually take the game, and the set 7-5.
It was the first time Swiatek had lost a set in a Grand Slam Final, and the first set she dropped in the entire 2023 French Open.
Muchova immediately broke serve in the first game of the third set, then served out to win the second game and take a 2-0 lead in the decisive third set, thanks to consecutive aces to close out the game. Swiatek took the third game, and then in the fourth, she had three break points to break serve and get back on serve.
She did just that, tying the decisive third set at 2-2.
In the fifth game, Swiatek kept the pressure on. She took the second point with a perfectly-placed shot made while coming to the net, following that with her first ace of the match, en route to sweeping the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead in the third set.
But just as she had the momentum, she lost it. Muchova held serve to win the sixth game, and then Muchova broke serve in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead over Swiatek in the third set.
It was gut-check time for Swiatek, needing to break serve and stem the tide. But champions respond in those gut-check moments. She took the first two points of the eighth game, but Muchova rebounded, including her third ace to tie the game at 40-40. However, a well-placed backhand from Swiatek, coupled with an unforced error from Muchova as she tried a drop shot amid a rally, saw Swiatek break serve, tying the decisive third set at 4-4.
Swiatek was back on serve as the ninth game began.
Muchova, however, took the first two points of the ninth game, both coming on forced errors from Swiatek. Could Muchova break again, giving her a chance to serve out for the title?
She would not.
A forehand winner from Swiatek, coupled with a forced error from Muchova, threw a wrench in those plans, as the ninth game was suddenly knotted at 30-30. An unforced error from Swiatek gave Muchova yet another break point of the match, but Swiatek created a forced error from Muchova, getting the game to deuce.
Swiatek then closed out the game, forcing a pair of errors from Muchova, to make it 5-4 in the third set. One more break and Swiatek would have her third French Open title, joining some impressive company.
The tenth game opened with a pair of unforced errors from Muchova, giving Swiatek the early advantage, putting her two points away from that third title. Muchova rallied to take the next point, but an unforced error saw Swiatek up 40-15, and on her her first Championship Point.
She closed it out, thanks to a double fault from Muchova, and the celebration was on.
