Seattle has made MLS work in a football stadium with a large second deck overhang and tarps. Vancouver has made MLS work in a football stadium with curtains creating a false roof. New England hasn’t made MLS work in a football stadium.
What MLS will look like in new Atlanta stadium
Atlanta will have a false roof that preserves the skyline view.
So when Atlanta was granted an expansion team and said they would play in the new 65,000 seat stadium being built for the Falcons, there was concern about how it would look. Would it be closer to Seattle or New England?
The answer: almost exactly like Vancouver.
The stadium will hold about 29,000 in soccer configuration. Beyond that, there isn’t much word on how else the stadium will function for soccer, but that number is a little concerning.
The Whitecaps’ work in BC Place partly because they limit capacity to 21,000, which they fill for every game and nullifies concerns about atmosphere in a football stadium. While Atlanta’s situation looks similar, visually, they will need to draw at least 25,000 per game, if not more, to create the same feel in their home as Vancouver does in theirs and make the false roof work.
