Haley Jones has received bad news twice this year: when she was waived from the Atlanta Dream in May and then from the Phoenix Mercury earlier this month.

But the former WNBA first-round pick has found another prospective home, signing with the Dallas Wings on Tuesday. She’ll provide some much-needed depth for a Wings team down four players, teaming up with Paige Bueckers, DiJonai Carrington, and Arike Ogunbowale. inthe backcourt.

An elite defender, Jones appeared in all 40 games for Atlanta last year, averaging 3.9 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 17.8 minutes per game. She spent training camp with the Dream and a week during the regular season on a hardship contract with the Mercury. Jones appeared in four games this season, averaging 2.3 points and 2 rebounds.

Jones’ stay in Dallas will likely be a limited one; the 24-year-old joins a club that is currently down four players: Ty Harris, who is out for the season with a knee injury; Maddy Seigrist, who was recently diagnosed with a fracture in her knee and should return later this season, and Luisa Geiselsöder and Teaira McCowan, both of whom are overseas with national team obligations. With Geiselsöder and McCowan both set to return later this month, it’s possible that Jones would be waived then.

The Wings also re-sign Kaila Charles

In addition to Jones, the Wings signed Kaila Charles to a hardship deal, whom they previously waived on Saturday. Charles spent the first 11 games of the season with the Wings, averaging 4.9 points and 3.5 rebounds. She was a second-round pick in the 2020 draft.
