I don’t think I’ve ever watched so many sporting events that didn’t count in the standings ... well outside of Spring Training that is. The weekend consisted of three events that meant absolutely nothing and I watched the better part of all of them for some unknown reason:
1) NASCAR’s Bud Shootout: You may not be a NASCAR fan or even a Dale Jr. fan, but it was good to see the lad succeeding again after his past few seasons and a tumultuous offseason. Earnhardt held off Tony Stewart to win the race and earn zero points to start the season. On Sunday, Jimmy Johnson won the pole for following Sunday’s official start of the season at Daytona.
2) Pebble Beach Celebrity Pro Am: I had never watched this event in the past but was pretty entertained throughout. I mean, where else can you watch Dan Marino acting way too serious, Andy Garcia wearing a pearl necklace, and “comedian” George Lopez crowd surfing after a drive on a par five? All of this goes on while a real PGA Tournament takes place. Vijay Singh choked away a substantial lead on Sunday and lost in a playoff to Steve Lowery.
3) NFL Pro Bowl: I honestly forgot this was even on when I wrote the Weekend Preview post on Friday. Kenny Albert, Daryl Johnston, and Tony Siragusa had the call for football’s all star game on Fox, and the whole event was basically just one big advertisement for the state of Hawaii. Albert read about 100 different promos for events on the island while Siragusa stumbled through interviews on the sideline. The only things I really learned were that Daryl Johnston forgot his helmet to one of his two Pro Bowl appearances and free agent-to-be Asanti Samuel can hit:
Weekend Tube Review: A Weekend Of Exhibitionism
In real sports news, college basketball had a rather exciting weekend as UCLA went down at Washington and Louisville took out Georgetown. The highlight of the weekend was ESPN’s Saturday night broadcast. Erin Andrews noticed that Cardinals’ coach Rick Pitino switched suits at halftime. Thinking it was a motivational tactic, Andrews interviewed the coach only to find out he spilled Diet Pepsi all over the white suit he was wearing in the first half.
There was also Boxing, NBA action and Bowling, but who can watch all of that when there are so many fake sporting events going on? (In the immortal words of Jesse Spano, “There’s never enough time!)
Quote of the Weekend:
“Fool me once shame on me, fool me twice shame on you. Is that how it goes? I always get that one wrong Kenny.”- Daryl Johnston, who apparently has much in common with W.
