Biggest Upset of the Weekend Overlooked

By David “Large” Larzelere
Lot of talk here on The Sporting Blog about this past weekend’s sports action, including mention of a few college basketball upsets of note, so I just want to chime in and alert everyone who might not have been paying attention that the biggest upset of the weekend took place in a squared circle in Temecula, CA.

That’s where Paul “The Punisher†Williams, an 8-1 favorite, lost his WBO welterweight belt to Carlos Quintana by unanimous decision. And when I say “lost,” let me just add that this was no Giants/Pats down-to-the-wire last-drive-touchdown squeaker we’re talking about here. Quintana dominated Williams from the opening bell, punished him you might say, and in doing so turned all of boxing’s conventional wisdom upside down.
Prior to this bout, Paul Williams was a superstar in the making who had proven his big-fight mettle by beating Antonio Margarito last summer, leading him to be considered by many fistic pundits as maybe the only fighter in the world who could take down the sport’s current king of kings, Floyd Mayweather. Now, on the Williams front at least, it seems that Floyd’s very wealthy head can rest easy in its bling-docious crown.
Upsets are in the air right now. Eli and the boys may have opened a previously undiscovered fracture in the universe that everyone else is going to stumble into for a while.
I know Williams/Quintana was not a major priority for the sports world at large, but for the narrow fraternity of boxing fans it was a marquee event, and for a fight of that magnitude, Quintana’s victory was one of the biggest upsets in recent memory. What I’m trying to say is, for all of you out there who are planning to lay down heavy action anytime soon, you might want to be cautious with your wagers. I mean, suddenly I’m thinking that maybe the Knicks will beat the Celtics in Boston this week, and maybe Jermain does have a chance against Pavlik, and as for Daytona, well, I have two words for you – Joe Nemechek.↵
