Vandy Students Are a Little Too Well Behaved

By Chris Mottram
As we have stated previously, we really don’t have a problem with students storming the floor after their team wins a big basketball game. If Syracuse fans wanna run around on the court after beating Georgetown, then they can knock themselves out. If Miami fans wanna attempt to get past the choke-happy security to hit the hardwood, so be it.
But what is totally unacceptable (aside from Ohio U. fans storming the court after beating George Mason over the weekend), is not rushing the court after taking down the No. 1 team in the country, especially when that team also happens to be your bitter, cross-state rival.
Let’s go to the post-game videotape from Vandy’s win over Tennessee last night. Observe two things: An empty basketball court and a full student section:

As Scott Van Pelt Style points out, ESPN did show several shots of police officers warning the kids not to rush the court before the final buzzer sounded, but come on. Those cops only have but so many taser guns and cans of pepper spray.
These super smart Vandy kids are clearly not sneaking enough booze into the arena. Either that, or they can’t navigate themselves up onto that tricky raised court situation they have in the Memorial Gym.

Update: Mac G took note of this lack of court storming as well.
Update No. 2: Here’s video of Vandy fans storming the court after beating Florida last year. The school was fined $25,000 for it. Still, I don’t understand how the school being fined would stop the students. If anyone has info about what penalties Vandy students face for court-storming, please send it along.↵
