Dan Patrick Doing Extremely Exciting Things at SI

By Chris Mottram
With Dan Patrick -- you know, the guy best known for his inexplicably long pauses between thoughts on live radio -- officially beginning at SI this week, Sports Business Daily was granted an interview with him.

And boy, am I ever excited about what Patrick’s got in store for us sports fans! (I’m laying the sarcasm on pretty thick.) Here’s a taste:
Question: What’s the subject of your first SI column?
Patrick: It’ll be sports-related, but I’m not a columnist. I’m not presenting myself as a columnist. There will be topics I write about, but I don’t think it is a case of me looking at this and saying I’m going to write about somebody who runs track in the Pacific Northwest. It’s not based on that. It could be an interview I had with Tom Coughlin. It could be a discussion I had with Doug Williams on being the first African-American quarterback to win a Super Bowl. It could be Jim McMahon looking at the ’85 Bears and how they would do against this year’s Patriots. It will run the gambit.
As interesting as I’m sure Patrick’s private conversations with athletes are, I care more about the dude running track in Oregon than whatever Coughlin, Williams or McMahon has to say about coaching/playing football.
And for even more awesomeness, look no further than Patrick’s “blog” on SI.com, which is actually written by “McLovin’”. It’s chocked full of tasty bits like this:
Dan’s Shaq cover for SI
02.06.08 | Dan’s idea for next week’s cover if the Shaq trade goes down: “Shaq-tus” with a picture of a big cactus with O’Neal’s head imposed on it. Or somehow merging a cactus and Shaq. Need some art direction on that. Hey, we didn’t get last week’s cover with the David Tyree catch. Maybe next week will be different.
HA! Get it? “Shaq-tus.” Because his name is Shaq and in Phoenix there are cacti! Oh, that’s rich, Dan. The sports blogosphere welcomes thee with open arms.↵
