FirstCuts: EA Will Casually Break Your Face

By Chris Littmann
Sports don’t start and end with a referee’s whistle. FirstCuts, a blog dedicated to sports culture, will cover everything outside the lines, from games to gear.
Judging from the comments on this site -- and about every other gaming site I ever read -- there’s a growing group of people tired of sports games that are so technically difficult they require a Master’s degree just to make it past the starting lineups.

With that, we’ve got another “casual” sports gaming title from EA: Facebreaker. (Side note: The name Facebreaker screams the opposite of casual. If one threatens to break my face, I will not take a casual attitude toward running the other direction.) Combining this title with others like FIFA Street 3 and NFL Tour seems to give the impression EA is setting a trend. It’s all part of EA Sports President Peter Moore’s plan, according to an interview with IGN. (Hat tip to MCVUK.com for the find.):
“There will be more announcements that will be, if you will, licensed intellectual property that will be, quite frankly, looking at the more casual consumer that we see as a bigger force in the business.”
I like the idea, but I’m not sure I’m crazy about the execution yet. Some of the Street titles have been fun, but they almost skew into being too simplistic. That being said, a cartoonish fighter with decent controls could be worth a shot.
Facebreaker will release on the Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 later in 2008.
