MLB Season Starts With a Day, Er, Morning Game

By Chris Mottram
It certainly doesn’t feel like Opening Day, but technically, it kind of is. I guess. Boston just beat Oakland 6-5 in the first game of the season, half a world away, with the first pitch coming before sunrise.
On the surface, there’s plenty to dislike as a baseball fan, but there really is something great about waking up to a ballgame while I drink my morning coffee. On top of that, this was a great game. It was back and forth, and with the A’s up one in the top of the ninth, Brandon Moss (who? J.D. Drew’s last minute replacement) hit a solo bomb off Houston Street to tie it and send it to extras. Yep, free baseball.
In the 10th, Manny hit a two-run, ultimately game-winning double. Needless to say, the Thundersticks were worn out by the end.
On top of all that, we had our first web gem of the year from Jacoby Ellsbury:

It’s my understanding that if you have DirecTV, you didn’t get to see any of this. Apparently, they had a bunch of “transponders” (whatever those are) go out around 2AM. Score one for good ole fashion cable.↵
