The Olympics, Brought To You By Spy Vs. Spy.

China excels at spying: in fact, former NSC member Richard Clark says the Chinese have gone as far as hacking into the furthest reaches of the Pentagon, indicating that if the Chinese aren’t taking plays out of Bill Belichick’s playbook, they at least respect his methods and are nodding appreciatively to him when he walks up in the club.
↵
↵They appear to have taken the same Patriots-esque tack toward international sports competition, too. The Danish women’s soccer team inadvertently discovered this the hard way before an international match last year:
↵↵⇥The Danish team was discussing team tactics in its hotel on the eve of their match against China in Wuhan when a team official noticed a movement from behind a black glass mirror. The officials called the hotel manager and demanded that a door be unlocked, revealing two men with cameras who were restrained by Danish officials until police arrived.↵↵This all happened during a strategy meeting, so disabuse yourself of any visions of Chinese spies selling videotapes of the team for salacious online content.
↵
↵The police and FIFA, however, did nothing, and no punishment will be handed down as a result of the incident. Now, consider that 500,000 additional security personnel will be in Beijing for the games: why won’t the Chinese spy on athletes, their meetings, their every moment? What’s stopping them?
↵
↵That they were capable of spying on every single man and woman in town for the Olympics was an ability the Chinese possessed; something like this, however, means that there’s not just ability, but a very real possibility that they could try to do just that.
↵
↵Your only consolation may be watching in the background of NBC broadcasts for a man in a trenchcoat and fedora taking sneaky notes from behind one of the couches in the NBC studio while Bob Costas segues to the 148th inspirational story of the day.↵
