PP Goal Gives Avs 5-2 Lead Now

John Michael-Liles just scored on a screen shot from the point on a power play to give the Avs their biggest lead of the night. It’s appropriate that Liles scored on a long, accurate wrist shot on Joe Sakic Night, given that Sakic was renowned for his deadly accurate wrist shot.

Will Nabokov be getting the hook for the third? I imagine if the Sharks don’t score before the end of the second period, he will.

Vancouver Will Not Quietly Into The Night, Neither Will The Flames

The Daniel & Henrik Sedin Connection fed the puck to Kevin Bieksa and put Vancouver is on the board early in the 2nd period.

But of course, all that did was just piss off the Flames more. Brandon Prust scored at the 9:34 mark and helped Calgary regain the three-point advantage, 3-1. Fredrik Sjostrom and Eric Nystrom assisted.

Goals Coming Fast and Furious in Avalanche-Sharks Game; Avs Up 4-2

The Sharks were quickly back within one with a Patrick Marleau power play goal, which was his second of the night. But the Avalanche came right back on a Wojtek Wolski goal on a beautiful backhand pass from behind the net to re-establish the two goal lead for the Avs.

It’s funny how Marleau is responding to having his captaincy stripped away and given to Rob Blake. His coach might not think that he’s a leader off the ice, but he’s proving to be one on it.

Cody McLeod Scores to Make it 3-1 Avalanche over Sharks

I’m wondering if the Sharks are still feeling the sting of their early exit in last year’s playoff as the Avalanche just took a 3-1 lead in the second period. Funny thing was that new Shark Dany Heatley who whined his way out of Ottawa was late on the backcheck to get McLeod before he banged a rebound past Evgeni Nabokov.

Joe Sakic was in the booth on Versus at the time of the goal and, in typical Joe Sakic understated fashion, he just calmly said, “Hey great goal by us right there.” Gotta love Joe no matter what team you follow.

Calgary Can Score When It’s 5-on-5 Too

The Flames are trying to make quick work of the Canucks on opening night.Adam Pardy to the feed from Craig Conroy with just under 8 minutes to go in the first period and made it a 3-0 game. The first intermission saved Vancouver from further suffering. For now.

Calgary and Vancouver both have seven shots on goal.

Colorado Retires Sakic’s No. 19 Before Game

The Avalanche crowd gave Joe Sakic a standing ovation before tonight’s game as his No. 19 jersey was retired and raised to the rafters. He joins Patrick Roy and Ray Borque as the only three Avs up there.

Sakic retired over the summer and left the game eighth all-time in points (1,641), 11th in assists (1,016) and 14th in goals (625).

The Sharks and Avs Come Out Firing, Avs Lead 2-1 In First Period

You certainly can’t say the scorers for San Jose and Colorado are rusty. You might want to say that about the goalies however.Darcy Tucker opened things up for the Avs with a goal at just past the two-minute mark. San Jose’s Patrick Marleau evened things up at the 5:47 point and then Wojtek Wolski but Colorado back on top 2-1 with just under 11 minutes to play in the first period.

Rene Bourque Makes It 2-0 Flames In The First Period

Rene Bourque scored on the man advantage with some help from Nigel Dawes and Mark Giordano to extend their lead over Vancouver to 2-0 a mere 8 minutes into the game.

This entire season, Calgary has scored every single time they’ve gotten a power play. Okay, it’s only twice, but…you know.

Laich, Ovechkin Each Score Again to Give Caps 4-0 Lead

Brooks Laich scored on the power play and Alex Ovechkin tallied shortly thereafter to give the Capitals a presumably insurmountable 4-0 lead early in the third period.

Safe to say this is not the way the Bruins wanted to open their season.

Leafs’ Pretty 5-on-3 Goal Ties It at 2-2

Tomas Kaberle’s pretty slap pass up a Matt Stajan tip-in for an alley-oop 5-on-3 goal. Kaberle’s pass from the point hit Stajan down low, easily tipping the puck stick-side past Carey Price.

The Leafs held the puck for too long during a delayed whistle that would have given them more 5-on-3 time, but they made the most of their limited time on the two-man advantage, scoring quickly.

Fourth Line Gives Canadiens 2-1 Lead

After his fight in the first period, Travis Moen scored to put himself an assist away from a Gordie Howe Hat Trick.

The fourth line for Montreal embarrassed the Toronto defense and goalie Vesa Toskala, scoring a soft despite being outnumbered on what was essentially a 2-on-4.
