Week 5 Add/Drop: The Touchdown Secret Weapon

Brett Favre’s three touchdowns on Monday Night defeated my fantasy team in my biggest league. So I’d like to suggest that Favre is dropped...preferably out of an airplane.

Add

Jacoby Jones - Huh? Why recommend a guy who had just a single catch on Sunday and has only five catches all season? Because, like David Letterman, Jones just can’t stop scoring! He pulled down a touchdown in both Week 2 and 3 and then ran back a kickoff for a TD this week. That’s three touchdowns for the season, one more than fantasy “stud” Larry Fitzgerald. If your league scores individual players for special teams performances (which is the only way to go) then Jones is even more valuable; he’s fourth in the league in kickoff return yardage and sixth in punt return yardage. With Matt Schaub and the Texan passing game heating up, Jones is a nice early-season sleeper.

Rashad Jennings - The 235 lb rookie from Liberty helped answer the puzzling question “Who is Maurice Jones-Drew’s backup?”. Jennings had an impressive nine carry, 53-yard day against what was supposed to be a very good Titans defense. Jennings is a mandatory handcuff for Jones-Drew owners and may start getting regular work to take some of the load off Jones-Drew.

Fred Jackson - If somebody in your league dumped Jackson because Marshawn Lynch’s suspension was over, run out and grab him now (Jackson, not the owner). Although the Bills were shut down by the Dolphins, Jackson had a respectable 4.7 yards per carry average on nine carries. And Marshawn Lynch? Eighteen inches per carry on eight attempts. Yikes. Maybe Marshawn should’ve passed on dessert during his suspension.

Drop

Deion Branch - Two words for you: Seneca Wallace. With Houshmandzadeh and TE John Carlson scooping up the few passes available, there’s not much left for Deion Branch. Branch is probably one of the greatest free agent busts of the past decade, so there’s not much point on leaving him on your fantasy roster now.

Dwayne Bowe (Trade) - Bowe was expected to top the 1000 receiving yard mark easily this year with the addition of Matt Cassel. Bzzzzzz! Wrong! Bowe has roped in 2 touchdowns but he only has 107 receiving yards for the entire year. The Chiefs play Dallas next week so you might want to hold on to him for that game, but after that you need to start planning to trade him if you can find someone who still likes the ‘name’. Yes, even if he has a great game against the Cowboys.

Josh Johnson - Yeah, he sounded like a decent waiver wire pickup when Leftwich was benched. Leftwich was the scapegoat though, the truth is that the Bucs just aren’t that good. With nothing left to play for, I think it’s likely that Tampa will start the Josh Freeman Era pretty soon. What the heck, the rookie can’t be any worse than Byron Leftwich and Josh Johnson, right?
