It has been a bad week for opponents playing in Ottawa. The Minnesota Wild are going to play Saturday night even after their equipment truck was on fire in the Scotiabank Place parking lot Friday afternoon. Twelve players have lost all of their equipment including both starting goaltender Nicolas Backstrom and backup goaltender Josh Harding. For most of these players, it takes weeks and even months for them to feel comfortable in the equipment they are playing in. Some players like Derek Boogard have worn the same pads for years:
In Ottawa, They Try And Get Every Advantage They Can
↵↵Wild left winger Derek Boogaard said he has had “the same shoulder pads since I was 12 years old. It’s definitely going to be different if I can’t scrape those out of my burned bag somehow.”
↵↵While this situation could just be a coincidence, after Wednesday night’s game between the Senators and Buffalo Sabres, Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff casually mentioned that seven of his players came down with food poisoning on the day of the game. Those seven players ate the chicken at a local steakhouse after the morning skate. The Senators won that game 2-0.
