Don Waddell: Ilya Kovalchuk Negotiations Have Hit A ‘Snag’

Ilya Kovalchuk is the face of the Atlanta Thrashers and his contract expires at the end of this season. The organization has been trying to work out a long term deal that would see Kovalchuk play for the Thrashers for the rest of his career. But as of now, those talks have come to a stand still:

↵↵“Our position is different than his position right now,” Waddell told the Journal-Constitution. “Their position is fixed years with money and we have a different side of that. That’s what we have to work through. We’ve gotten through every thing else, now we have to make it through that.”

↵↵While problems happen with contract talks during the course of negotiations, those problems become magnified when the negotiations are with a player of this magnitude. Thrashers fans should not worry that there is no deal done yet at this point, but if there is still an impasse as the season winds closer to the trade deadline, the distractions will build louder.
