That’s Gonna Leave a Mark

If you’re given less than 1/10th of a second to react to anything coming at your head over 100 MPH, you’re going to lose every time. It’s science; I don’t make the rules. Last night, Giants reliever Joe Martinez learned this first-hand when Mike Cameron hit a line drive directly off the pitcher’s head, about an inch from his temple:↵

↵
↵Note the sequence of events after being hit: jello legs, instant shock, pain sets in, bleeding commences. This is usually not followed by walking off under your own power, so kudos to Martinez. He’s tougher than us.
↵
↵He was taken to a hospital immediately and is fine, having only suffered a concussion to go along with some swelling and bleeding. I’m only a scientist, not a doctor, but when someone gets hit in the forehead area and blood comes from their nose, that would seem to indict a more serious injury. Good to know that’s not the case so I don’t feel quite as bad watching the above video on repeat.↵
