Fred Smoot Wants Fat Boys, Has a Point

You might think being a general manager of a professional football team is a difficult job. There’s 52 roster spots, all of which you’re ultimately responsible for filling with the best talent possibly, while at the same time ensuring cohesiveness (see: not signing T.O.). Here’s the thing, though: It’s actually quite simple. All you need is the best fat boys. And Fred Smoot, Redskins cornerback and mouthpiece, knows this:↵↵⇥“Fat boys wins my game,” he said. “I know football, and in December, in the playoffs, fat boys win. Whoever’s got the best fat boys is gonna win, so I’m gonna collect fat boys. I can find Fred Smoots -- not a dime a dozen, but I can find cornerbacks that can make plays. I can find that. I can’t find a big boy that can push this line for four quarters.” ↵↵Smoot is in a contract year, so implying that cornerbacks are easy to find (not a dime a dozen, but maybe like a quarter, nickel and three pennies a dozen) might not be the smartest move. He does have a valid, albeit extremely simplified, point about fat boys though. You can have Jay Cutler -- who I have come to understand is the greatest quarterback of all-time via various media outlets this week -- behind center, but if that center isn’t a talented, athletic, defensive lineman-blocking fat boy, then you’re team’s worthless. Same for the two guys to his left and right. Lines win championships, on both sides of the ball. ↵↵This is why draft picks are good, you see? You draft fat boys ... good, young fat boys to build your team around. The Jay Cutlers of the world? I can find that. And so can the Broncos with one of the four fist round picks they have over the next two seasons. ↵
