Texas blog Burnt Orange Nation (disclosure: my home base) has five things to watch from the Longhorns on Saturday evening. Perhaps most interesting will be how much Colt McCoy will be asked/allowed to run the football. A year ago the Heisman runner-up was both prolific passer (NCAA-record 77% completions, 173.8 QB rating, 34 TDs) and rusher (team-best 561 yards rushing, 11 TDs).
Texas QB Colt McCoy Ready to Run?
But through two games this year McCoy has rushed for just 41 yards as his coaches aimed to preserve him for the challenging stretch runs in October-November. Following the offense’s rocky first half outing against Wyoming, however, Texas head coach Mack Brown sat down for a heart-to-heart with his star quarterback, telling him to let loose and have fun.
As I wrote earlier in the week: it’s time for Texas to relax and have fun with their arsenal of talent:
In retrospect, it seems obvious — one of those things I wonder how I didn’t pick up on my own. In some sense, though, we’ve all been suffering from a being a bit too emotionally wound up. We all know how good this team can/should be, and we’re all pressing for perfection. Time, perhaps, for us to relax a bit and remember to have fun. Ditto Colt McCoy and the rest of the offense, who continue to be at their best when McCoy is making plays with his feet, creating offense where there is none.
Hopefully Mack Brown’s diagnosis is the right one and, despite not being totally sure what’s been off, stumbled into the right cure.
Go get you some, Colt.
