Putting aside the Southern Cal carnage for a moment, this is a signature win for a Washington program that’s undergoing an overhaul under first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian. For those that stayed up late enough to see their first game of the year (Kickoff at 11:00 EST), you would have seen a decidedly competitive football game between the Huskies and no. 9 LSU.
Footnote to the Latest Chapter at USC: Washington’s on the Rise
Washington may have succumbed in the end, but after last season’s 0-12, manhood-stripping apocalypse of a season, a 31-23 loss to a top ten team is a considerable moral victory. And today, the Huskies took another step on the road to redemption.
While many in the media will rightfully cast this game in a negative light—the Trojans lost yet another game in which they were heavily favored, giving away a shot at the national title in the process—it’s important to remember who won. Hindsight may tell us one day that this was a crucial step toward legitimacy for a burgeoning Washington program.
The Huskies already have an impressive recruiting class for 2010, and today’s performance will only enhance that crop. The Pac-10 has been a USC-monopoly for years now, but with Steve Sarkisian at the helm and USC stumbling, who’s to say that won’t change? It may not happen this year, but sometime soon, we just might see Washington unseating the folks at Southern Cal.
