An interesting article from the Boston Herald talks about how opposing teams have discovered that the way to beat the New England offensive juggernaut is to blitz Tom Brady and blitz him a lot.
Teams Look To Stop Brady With The Blitz
For the longest time, the thinking on Tom Brady was that if you attacked him, he’d make you pay. Blitz him, and he’d quickly get rid of the ball, find the open receiver, and undoubtedly burn you. There was no need to test the risk/reward ratio. It was goodbye blitz, or goodbye hopes for victory. Now, we’ve witnessed a complete turnaround. To beat Brady, it’s an all-out blitz-o-rama. And it’s likely going to be that way, until the Patriots quarterback and his offense prove they can counteract the onslaught.
Fantasy owners have already seen the impact of this on the Patriots’ running game as the team ranks 26th in the NFL with a measly 78 rushing yards per game. While New England has survived with just their incredible passing game before, so far this season the passing game hasn’t been much better for Tom Brady owners. Leaving out the last two drives of the Buffalo game -- where the Bills went to a soft prevent-style defense -- Tom Brady only has 241 passing yards a game this year. That won’t get it done for a 1st or 2nd-round fantasy pick.
It will be interesting to see if the Falcons defense (which has smothered Ronnie Brown and DeAngelo Williams in consecutive weeks) will unleash the blitz on the Patriots as well.
