Pennington Will Seek Second Opinion

When is someone going to do a feature-length profile on Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham, Alabama? He’s been at this for almost a decade now, and every week, it seems like he’s meeting with a different star athlete to consult with them regarding an injury. Just today, he’s been a prominent part of two front page stories (the other involving Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford, who’s got a shoulder injury of his own).

I want to know more about this man.

Putting that concern aside, however, Chad Pennington will travel to Birmingham, where he’ll get a second opinion on the injury to his throwing shoulder.

According to the Miami Herald:

Pennington has already endured two serious surgeries to the same shoulder, which has caused him to face major, tedious recoveries. A two-time recipient of the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award, Pennington will seek a second opion from Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala.

If this is the end of Pennington’s time in Miami, it will have been short-lived but largely celebrated. He completed 321 of 476 passes last year for a career-high 3,653 yards while providing the inspiration for the greatest turnaround in NFL history.

By all accounts, it looks like his season’s over—a visit to Dr. James Andrews is NEVER a good omen—but it does seem there’s still a glimmer of hope for Dolphins fans and Pennington, himself. Nothing’s official yet.
