On Friday, after recording a save against the Tampa Bay Rays, his 32nd of the season, Tigers closer Fernando Rodney celebrated in a fashion that probably many pitchers before him wish they had thought of: he threw the baseball into the press box at Tropicana Field. For his actions, he’ll be suspended three games. And also fined an undisclosed amount.

Rodney said later he was acting on emotion when he threw the ball from the field into the press box, where several reporters were working. No one was hurt.
Detroit manager Jim Leyland said after Friday’s game and again Saturday he did not consider it a big deal.
Assuming he does not appeal, the suspension will start tonight, with the Tigers in Kansas City to play the Royals.
